  • Saturday, June 29, 2019—10:00 am central time: Dispatch from New Zealand featuring Chardonnay and Sparkling wine! Join Jane A. Nickles, CSE, CWE and a panel of winemakers fresh from New Zealand’s Chardonnay and Sparkling Wine Symposium (held in Gisborne this past January and February). We’ll discuss the recent rise of Chardonnay and Sparkling wine in New Zealand, and get a chance to hear from some of the country’s leading winemakers specializing in Chardonnay and bubbles.

But do we really know what soil is—what it is composed of, how we define a soil type, and how the soil affects the vine? Join us for a one-hour session on soil—we’ll discuss parent materials, particle sizes, how we define and classify soils, and how the soil impacts the vines and the grapes.

  • Wednesday, September 18—7:00 pm central time: Members only webinar: Top Ten Tips for Teaching Wine 101, presented by Jane A. Nickles, CSE, CWE: Teaching consumer-based wine classes is a great way to earn your chops as a wine educator (not to mention a deep-and-wide source of potential revenue). Yet the consumers in the audience bring their own set of challenges: some are absolute beginners and some are quite advanced! So, how do you design a class that keeps everyone interested and engaged? Russ will offer up a series of whisk(e)y flights (one Scotch, one Irish) and lead us on a discovery of the differences between the products, the classifications, and their rules and regulations. Russ Kempton is the owner of Speaking of Grapes and Grains – a company which educates, entertains, and consults on all aspects of alcoholic beverages.

While Oregon is an important player on the high-end wine market, and sets the bar high in sustainability, it is also known to be extremely low-key.  This webinar will cover Oregon’s fascinating wine history and geography, and introduce a few major personalities, so you can appreciate just how different Oregon’s story is. And you may well ask, what will it take to keep Oregon weird?
