Is there a way to access a list of SWE members and/or holders of SWE certifications?
Active SWE members may sign into the SWE website and access the online membership database. This database includes a listing of those people that have
successfully obtained one or more SWE certifications.
Non-members seeking to verify the certification of a job applicant should contact the Society of Wine Educators at info@societyofwineeducators.org with their specific request.
Questions regarding certification resources
What is the SWE Wine Academy?
The Society of Wine Educators offers a comprehensive, interactive series of online study modules: The SWE Wine Academy.
This Academy represents the first online educational offering that is officially tied into an international certification program in wine. Access to the SWE Wine Academy provides CSW candidates with an additional study tool as they prepare for the Certified Specialist of
Wine (CSW) exam.
However, please note that the SWE Wine Academy is not an exact duplicate of the CSW Study Guide and thus, may not be sufficient preparation for the
CSW. All questions for the CSW Exams are drawn from exclusively from the CSW Study Guide, not the online modules. Moreover, some candidates have noted
that they while they felt confident with the online quizzes, they did not feel sufficiently prepared when they sat the actual exam.
The SWE Wine Academy is divided into fifteen study units:
-
Australia
-
Germany & Austria
-
France
-
Chile & Argentina
-
Italy
-
Portugal
-
Spain
-
USA
-

Each interactive study module is comprised of a pre-test, mini-quizzes, and a post-test, with immediate feedback provided. A bookmarking feature allows
the student to pick up a lesson where they last left off.
How can I get access to the SWE Wine Academy?

tasting the wines of the world. The CWE continues to be a self-directed program of study. However, candidates will find the CWE Preview Workbook to be
a concise manual laying out a road-map that will guide them toward the best route towards success.
The CWE Preview Workbook includes detailed explanations of every portion of the CWE exam including the written exam, blind tasting, SWE Tasting

Specific Questions regarding the Certified Specialist of Wine (CSW) Examination
What is the format for the CSW Exam?
The Certified Specialist of Wine (CSW) Exam is made up of 100, multiple-choice questions. Candidates are given one (1) hour in which to complete the
exam. All questions for these exams are drawn exclusively from the CSW Study Guide. A score of 75% or better is required to successfully pass the exam
and earn the CSW post-nominal.
How long does it take to study for the Certified Specialist of Wine (CSW) Examination?
How long you should study depends upon your base level of knowledge and the amount of time you can devote to studying within a specified period. It is
suggested that candidates with limited knowledge of wine should expect to set aside several months to study for the CSW Exam and most candidates report
taking an average of six months to prepare for the exam. All of the content tested for the exam comes directly from the CSW Study Guide, so candidates
need sufficient time to read the study guide and review the material prior to sitting for the exam.
How should I prepare for the Certified Specialist of Wine (CSW) Examination?
All questions presented on the CSW Exam are drawn exclusively from the CSW Study Guide. Accordingly, candidates should read and review the CSW Study
Guide in depth as the best preparation for the exam.
As with any examination, candidates should assess their strengths and weaknesses and ensure that they are adequately prepared to answer questions on
all areas tested on the exam. However, candidates may wish to keep the following question distribution in mind when studying:

What resources are available for studying for the Certified Specialist of Wine (CSW) Examination?
Candidates studying for the CSW Exam have the following resources available to them:
-
CSW Study Guide
-
CSW Lesson Plans Workbook
-
SWE Wine Academy
What are the differences between the CSW Study Guide and the SWE Online Wine Academy?
The CSW Study Guide is a printed, comprehensive book and is the sole source for question content for the CSW Exam.
The SWE Wine Academy is an online presentation of content similar, but NOT IDENTICAL, to that presented in the CSW Study Guide. This is an optional,
additional tool for preparing for the CSW Exam. Many candidates find the online modules useful as a study tool because there are pre- and post- test
questions to help assess a candidate's knowledge. However, it should not be considered to be an alternative to reading and reviewing the CSW Study
Guide. In addition, several candidates who relied heavily on the online modules as their main preparation for the exam have reported that they felt
unprepared when actually taking the exam.
Where and when are Certified Specialist of Wine (CSW) Exams scheduled?
Exams are scheduled throughout the calendar year and are held in locations throughout the U.S. as well as overseas. Specifically, non-U.S. exams have
been held in Japan, Singapore, and Hong Kong. We hope to add additional overseas exam sites as interest grows. For 2011, we anticipate offering 100 CSW
Exams. The current exam calendar is available online [link], with additional exam dates added as they become available.
Is there a discount if I pay for the Certified Specialist of Wine (CSW) Exam at the same time that I purchase a CSW Study Guide?
Yes, candidates that purchase the CSW Study Guide at the same time that they pay for the CSW Exam will pay less money than if they purchased the study
guide and exam separately. Candidates will have one year from the date of purchase in which to sign up for a specific exam date. Candidates that do not
register for an exam date within this time frame will forfeit their exam fee and be required to pay again when they do finally select and register for
an exam date.
The current discounts are as follows:
Members: $315.00 (vs. $335.00 without discount)
Non-members: $390.00 (vs. $490.00 without discount)
Can I begin studying for the Certified Specialist of Wine (CSW) Exam without signing up for an exam date?
Yes, candidates may purchase a CSW Study Guide at any time and begin studying immediately upon receipt. Candidates can then register for an exam date
when they are ready to take the exam.
Is it necessary to attend the Certified Specialist of Wine (CSW) Preview?
While candidates may find the CSW Preview session to be helpful to them in preparing to sit for the CSW Exam, attendance at the CSW Preview is strictly
voluntary. Many candidates have successfully passed the CSW Exam without having attended a CSW Preview.
What should I expect from the Certified Specialist of Wine (CSW) Preview?
The CSW Preview is an optional program offered in conjunction with the annual conference and occasionally during the year. The day-long program
provides an overview on the topics covered on the CSW Exam and will provide participants with sample questions, which will give them a good idea as to
what to expect on the CSW Exam. The CSW Preview is not meant as a comprehensive review as not all exam content is covered in the preview due to the
volume of material presented in the CSW Study Guide and time constraints. Thus, it is recommended that candidates take the CSW Preview 6 to 12 months
prior to sitting for the exam. In addition, they are strongly encouraged to read and review the CSW Study Guide as their main preparation for the exam.
Moreover, successful performance on the CSW Exam is not contingent on one's attendance at the CSW Preview.
Is it necessary to take the Certified Specialist of Wine (CSW) Exam prior to sitting for the CWE Exam?
Yes, it is the policy of the Society of Wine Educators that a candidate must have passed the CSW Exam before they can register for the CWE Exam. There
are no exceptions to this requirement and we do not offer waivers or reciprocity for any other wine certifications or credentials a candidate may
possess.
I have the 2008 edition of the Certified Specialist of Wine (CSW) Study Guide, is that sufficient to prepare for the exam?
While a six month grace period was provided when the 2010 edition was published, the 2008 edition of the CSW Study Guide is no longer sufficient to
prepare for the CSW Exam for any exams given after December 31, 2010. Accordingly, all candidates taking exams in 2011 are encouraged to purchase a
new, 2010 edition of the CSW Study Guide if they are still in possession of the 2008 edition in order to ensure that they are adequately prepared to
take the CSW Exam.
Do I need to purchase the Certified Specialist of Wine (CSW) study guide in order to sit the CSW exam?
It is highly encouraged that all CSW Exam candidates purchase the CSW Study Guide in order to adequately prepare for the CSW Exam. Candidates who
choose not to purchase the CSW Study Guide will find themselves at a significant disadvantage as all questions presented on the CSW Exam are drawn
exclusively from the CSW Study Guide. Candidates with wine knowledge from other sources may not have the same focus or emphasis as that included in the
CSW Study Guide.
How long does it take to receive my official results after sitting the Certified Specialist of Wine (CSW) Exam?
Upon completion of the exam, all candidates' Scantron sheets and exams are returned to the SWE Office for grading. Given the volume of exams
administered each month, candidates should expect to receive their official results six to eight weeks after sitting the CSW Exam. Please do not
contact the office to inquire about your results.
What is the pass rate for Certified Specialist of Wine (CSW)?
The pass rate for the CSW Exam is approximately 58% on the first attempt.
Is there a process in place which can give me an analysis of my exam results?
Candidates who sit the CSW Exam, but are not successful in passing it, may choose to pursue a Paid Exam Review. This process costs $75.00 and will
provide the candidate with an analysis of their content strengths and weaknesses on the exam, which will help the candidate to identify areas of
knowledge upon which to focus to better prepare for future exam attempts. At no time are candidates provided with a copy of their exam or the specific
exam questions, nor will the review change or effect the final grading of previous exam attempts. Official reviews can take up to three weeks.
Are there local classes that I can take leading up to obtaining the Certified Specialist of Wine (CSW) certification?
The CSW certification is intended to be a self-study endeavor, based upon the content provided in the CSW Study Guide. Accordingly, no classes are
required to pursue this certification. However, depending upon your market, there are some private wine schools that offer CSW study courses as
preparation for the CSW Exam. These programs are not offered under the SWE auspices and SWE does not make any claims as to the quality of these
programs. Candidates should be aware that while they may find these programs to be helpful to them in their preparation, they are not required to
successfully pass the exam and thus, a candidate's decision to enroll in such a program is strictly voluntary.
Are there discounts for those companies looking to put six (6) or more people through the Certified Specialist of Wine (CSW)
program?
Yes, companies enrolling six (6) or more individuals will receive discounted rates on the CSW Exam and Study Guide, as well as the CSW Lesson Plans
Workbook and Online Wine Academy. In addition, these companies will have the opportunity to schedule a private group exam. The exam will be hosted at
the corporation's chosen site and officiated by an authorized proctor.

Varietal/Appellation Identification Tasting Exam & Tasting Rationale
The Varietal/Appellation Identification Tasting Exam examines a candidate's ability to correctly identify grape varieties and major wine appellations
when blind tasting wine samples. Candidates are presented with eight (8) glasses of wine (4 glasses of white wine, 4 glasses of red wine) and an
examination sheet listing ten (10) wines (2 of the wines listed are not among the wines that have been poured). Candidates must correctly identify and
match the glasses in front of them with the list of wines on the examination sheet. A passing score of 6/8 is required to pass this portion of the
exam.
As part of the Varietal/Appellation Identification Tasting Exam, candidates are asked to complete a Tasting Rationale for one of the wines being
tasted. The Tasting Rationale provides the candidate with the opportunity to demonstrate their deductive reasoning in identifying the grape variety or
appellation of a given glass of wine. A glass number will be identified and candidates will need to complete the Tasting Rationale in full for this
wine. Candidates must receive a minimum of 21 of 28 points to successfully pass this portion of the exam.
Candidates must pass both the Varietal/Appellation Identification Tasting Exam and the Tasting Rationale to receive a pass for this component of the
exam. A total of 45 minutes is provided to complete both tasks.
Faults/Imbalances Identification Tasting Exam
The Faults/Imbalances Identification Tasting Exam examines a candidate's ability to correctly identify faults and imbalances when blind tasting wine
samples. Candidates are presented with eight (8) glasses of wine, along with a ninth glass that is the control. Seven of the wines have been
adulterated with a fault or an imbalance. Candidates must correctly identify and match the glasses in front of them with the list of faults and
imbalances, along with the unadulterated wine, on the examination sheet, within 30 minutes. A passing score of 6/8 is required to pass this portion of
the exam.
Presentation Skills Demonstration
As of 2010, CWE candidates must successfully demonstrate their ability to present on a wine topic in front of a live audience. Accordingly, candidates
must make a 10-15-minute, educational presentation on an approved topic (link to approved topics) to be evaluated by several Assessors based upon a
specific grading rubric (link to rubric). Candidates must pass all written and tasting portions of the exam prior to giving this presentation. Topics
and grading rubrics will be provided to Candidates prior to the presentation. Candidates decide when they are ready to complete this portion of the
certification process, and will be given the alternative to submit a video recorded version of the presentation, subject to SWE guidelines.
Responsible Beverage Alcohol Service Certification
The Society of Wine Educators feels strongly that its members should adhere to the principles and practices of responsible beverage alcohol service.
Accordingly, CWE candidates must submit evidence of current certification with either their state's responsible beverage alcohol service program, the
National Restaurant Association's Educational Foundation's ServSafe Alcohol® or TiPS® (Training for Intervention ProcedureS).
Is it necessary to take the CSW Exam prior to sitting for the Certified Wine Educator (CWE) Examination
?
Yes, it is the policy of the Society of Wine Educators that a candidate must have passed the CSW Exam before they can register for the CWE Exam. There
are no exceptions to this requirement and we do not offer waivers or reciprocity for any other wine certifications or credentials a candidate may
possess.
I already have a credential from the Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET); do I need to take the CSW first?

regardless of other credentials or certifications that the candidate may hold.
How long does it take to study for the Certified Wine Educator (CWE) Examination?
How long you should study depends upon your base level of knowledge and the amount of time you can devote to studying within a specified period. The
Certified Wine Educator exam is a challenging and comprehensive exam and thus takes considerably longer to prepare than the Certified Specialist of
Wine exam. Candidates are expected to have a significant breadth and depth of wine knowledge, along with blind tasting skills and the ability to
clearly communicate about wine through a written essay and an oral presentation. Accordingly, such preparation generally takes six months to a year,
again depending upon the candidate's prior knowledge and ability to find time to study. Most candidates take an average of 16 months to prepare for the
exam.
How should I prepare for the Certified Wine Educator (CWE) Examination?

Can I begin studying for the Certified Wine Educator (CWE) Examination before signing up for an exam date?
Yes, candidates may begin studying for the CWE Exam at any time prior to selecting and registering for an exam location and date.
How should I prepare for the Varietal/Appellation Identification component of the Certified Wine Educator (CWE) Examination?
The most important preparation is to practice blind tasting in advance of sitting for the CWE Exam. Candidates should set up tastings under simulated
exam conditions and test their ability to identify the grape variety and/or appellation of a given glass of wine. Formal practice may be obtained by
attending the CWE Preview. However, a single practice generally isn't sufficient. Additional information on tasting exercises may be found in the CWE
Preview Workbook or the University Wine Course book.
How should I prepare for the Tasting Rationale component of the Certified Wine Educator (CWE) Examination?
The Tasting Rationale may be downloaded from the SWE website, so that candidates can practice using this format for note taking on wines tasted in
preparation for the exam. The Tasting Rationale categorizes the wine tasting process into five steps: Appearance, Condition and Aromas, Palate, Finish
and Conclusion. These steps represent a logical approach to evaluating wine and are similar to systems used by other wine organizations. By using these
steps, the candidate can demonstrate his/her ability to apply an analytical methodology to identifying the variety or appellation of a given wine.
How should I prepare for the Faults/Imbalances tasting component of the Certified Wine Educator (CWE) Examination?
The most important preparation is to practice tasting faults and imbalances in doctored samples in advance of sitting for the CWE Exam. Candidates
should set up tastings under simulated exam conditions and test their ability to identify the a fault or imbalance in a given glass of wine. Formal
practice may be obtained by attending the CWE Preview. However, a single practice isn't sufficient. Additional information on tasting exercises may be
found in the CWE Preview Workbook or the University Wine Course book. In addition, SWE offers a Faults/Imbalances Kit for purchase ($30.00 for 750 ml
bottles; $40.00 for 1.5L bottles) to assist candidates in preparing for the exam.
Where and when are Certified Wine Educator (CWE) Examinations scheduled?
Exams are scheduled throughout the calendar year and are held in locations throughout the U.S. as well as overseas. Specifically, non-U.S. exams have
been held in Japan, Singapore, and Hong Kong. We hope to add additional overseas exam sites as interest grows. For 2011, we anticipate offering 6 CWE
Exams. The current exam calendar is available online [link], with additional exam dates added as they become available.
Is it necessary to attend the Certified Wine Educator (CWE) Examination Preview?
While candidates may find the CWE Preview session to be helpful to them in preparing to sit for the CWE Exam, attendance at the Preview is strictly
voluntary. Many candidates have successfully passed the CWE Exam without having attended a CWE Preview.
What should I expect from the Certified Wine Educator (CWE) Examination Preview?
The CWE Preview is a full-day program, which is intended to provide candidates with just that - a preview of what to expect on each of the exam
components. Thus, participants are given the opportunity to practice multiple-choice questions, take a mock essay and sit through appellation/varietal
identification and faults/imbalances identification tasting exercises under simulated exam conditions. It is recommended that those candidates wishing
to attend a CWE Preview do so well in advance of sitting for the actual exam as it is not intended as a review or cram session. Wine content topics are
not expressly covered in this program.
Which programs qualify for the new requirement that all Certified Wine Educators have Responsible Beverage Alcohol Certification?
As of January 2010, SWE requires that CWE candidates must submit evidence of current responsible beverage alcohol certification.
SWE has approved the following national programs:
SWE will also approve state-specific programs in the following instances:
o CA: Licensee Education on Alcohol and Drugs (L.E.A.D)
o Indiana
o Maryland (Montgomery County)
o Texas
To meet this requirement, candidates should submit appropriate documentation of their current certification with an approved program (as noted above)
to the Director of Education within one (1) month of completing all other requirements for the CWE certification.
This is a one-time requirement; proof of recertification is not necessary.
What do I need to know about the Presentation Skills Demonstration component of the Certified Wine Educator (CWE) Examination?
As of 2010, CWE candidates must successfully demonstrate their ability to present on a wine topic in front of an audience. Accordingly, candidates must
make a 10-15-minute, educational presentation on an approved topic to be evaluated by several Assessors based upon a specific grading rubric.
Candidates must pass all written and tasting portions of the exam prior to giving this presentation. Topics and grading rubrics will be provided to
Candidates prior to the presentation. Candidates decide when they are ready to complete this portion of the certification process. Candidates may make
their presentations in person at the SWE conference or they are given the alternative to submit a video recorded version of the presentation, subject
to SWE guidelines.
Can I select my own topic for the Presentation Skills Demonstration component of the Certified Wine Educator (CWE) Examination?
No, SWE can not permit candidates to select their own topics. Each year, the Society of Wine Educators adopts a set of approved topics, selected by our
team of experts and based upon the educational goals of the Presentation Skills Demonstration component. This list of topics will be valid for one
year. After successful completion of all written exams (Theory, Varietal/Appellation Identification and Faults/Imbalances Identification), CWE
Candidates will be able to choose one topic from this list on which to present, adhering to the presentation guidelines and rubric for this exam
component.
When should I expect my exam results after sitting the Certified Wine Educator (CWE) Examination?
Due to the nature of the CWE Exam, most portions of the exam must be hand-scored as opposed to machine-scored, which takes a significant amount of
time, particularly with regard to scoring the essay portion. Accordingly, official exam results are generally sent out 8-10 weeks after the exam date,
but may be delayed if there was a large volume of candidates sitting for a particular exam date. Please do not contact the SWE Office regarding your
exam results.
Is there a process in place which can give me additional analysis on my exam results?
Yes, candidates who sit the CWE Exam, but are not successful in passing one or more components, may choose to pursue a Paid Exam Review. This process
costs $150.00 and will provide the candidate with an analysis of their content strengths and weaknesses on the multiple-choice exam, along with
analyses on the candidate's performance on the essay and tasting components. These analyses should help the candidate to identify areas upon which to
focus to better prepare for future exam attempts. At no time are candidates provided with a copy of their exam or the specific exam questions, nor will
the review change or effect the final grading of previous exam attempts. Candidates will receive results within four weeks of payment processing.
If I should not be successful after my first exam attempt, is there a grace period before I am allowed to reschedule?
Candidates who are not successful on their first attempt at the CWE Exam may schedule to re-sit the component(s) as soon as they are ready. However, it
is strongly recommended that candidates take time to review and prepare before re-sitting the exam. If a candidate needs to re-sit only a component of
the exam, s/he may pay a CWE Partial Exam Retake fee instead of registering for the full exam. Current pricing for a CWE Partial Exam Retake is $240.00
for members and $260.00 for non-members.
I received a partial pass several years ago, do I have to re-sit the entire exam?
Candidates who sat for the exam before December 31, 2009 and passed any portion were given until July 29, 2010 to pass all remaining portions without
needing to pass the new requirements that were implemented in 2009-10. As this deadline has now passed, all CWE candidates must pass all requirements
in order to successfully earn the CWE certification, regardless of when you began taking the CWE Exam. However, if you have already received a passing
grade for one or more components of the CWE Exam, these portions do not need to be retaken.
What is the pass rate for the Certified Wine Educator (CWE) Examination?
The pass rate for candidates successfully passing all three components of the exam on the first try is 12%. For candidates who re-sit all or part of
the CWE Exam, the pass rates are as follows:
Theory/Written Exam - 22%
Varietal/Appellation Identification Tasting Exam & Tasting Rationale - 64%
Faults/Imbalances Identification Tasting Exam - 63%
